Riga hosts a population of over 800,000 inhabitants, prodominantly Russian even though the official language is Latvian, which amounts to almost one third of the countrys whole population. Riga is the biggest city in the Baltics, offering a degree of cosmopolitan bustle, sophistication and sheer urban chaos that neither Tallinn nor Vilnius can really compete with.
Riga is one of the best looking cities with it's rich history with it's fabulous architecture making this a breathetaking place to visit in Eastern Europe. Whether you want a day or exhilarting extreme sports or you simply just prefer to take it easy and encapsulate the sites at your leisure, Riga has it all and by night, things really start to hot up.
If you are visiting Riga for a Stag Weekend or Hen Weekend, you will surely have a full packed, exciting and more imporatntly, memorable time. Riga offers innumerable opportunities for bar-hopping, with the old town in particular being the most lively offering a multiplicity of drinking venues seven nights a week. Drinks are affordable and most places are open until midnight during the week and from 2am on a Friday and Saturday night. Bars regulary feature live music or DJs and most offer food of some sort so you can line those stomaches before you get too drunk.
The Latvian national liqueur is Rigas Melnais Balzams (Riga Black Balsam), which is dark and gooey, roughly the texture of motor oil. While some turn their noses up at it, others love it. It is made from dozens of ingredients, some of which you'd probably rather not know about!
Riga weather is slightly cooler than here in the UK with the Summer usually warm, around 22C, with long hours of daylight and the winter, cold and often snowy with temperatures around -5C.
The good news is that in the Summer month you'll ususally find the locals partying out on the streets; winter finds them indoors getting stuck into all manner of strong booze. Simply put, whichever season you visit you can't go wrong!
